E8IGHT Engineer Peter's DAILY

Hello everyone, this is E8IGHT!
Today, we’d like to introduce you to a day in in the life of Peter, who is an LBM engineer in E8IGHT’s Solution Research Support Team. Without further ado, let’s get right to it!
I work out the first thing in the morning to energize myself for the day ahead. On weekdays, I get up at 5, wake myself up with some coffee, then go for a run outside to warm up. I ran about 12 km today around the neighborhood where I live and also work. Then, I went to the gym and did 5 sets each of 5 different shoulder exercises: Dips, Seated Arnold presses, Seated rear deltoid raises, Seated lateral dumbbell raises, and Forward dumbbell raises.
This neighborhood has some truly beautiful views in the morning. The calm and the beauty of the sunrise pumps the start of my day up. As I run past the dark, quiet office building where I work, I mentally organize the tasks I have planned to complete for the day.
After wrapping up my morning workout and getting ready for the day, I get to work which takes me about 3 minutes on foot. Because I live so close to work, I can spend the time I would have otherwise spent on commuting on doing the things that I like to do and keep a good work-and-life balance.
The LBM team that I am a part of aims to develop a Korean Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software product based on the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM), and release it to the CFD market, where traditionally non-Korean software products have dominated. LBM is a relatively new field of study in CFD, so the nature of my work requires a lot of literature survey, academic research, derivations, and code writing.

For lunch, I go to local restaurants with my team members. There are surprisingly a lot of good places that only locals are privy to, so it’s a little game of the day to choose what to eat for lunch out of the 7 restaurants my company partners with. Today, we chose to go to the Chinese place. It’s been a little chilly lately, so I ordered Jjambbong to warm me up with the soup.

After lunch, some members of the Solution Research Team and I held a meeting to discuss how to approach a new set of cases that a client has asked us to analyze. We all have similar academic backgrounds and are about the same age, so we have a very open-floor approach to holding meetings and discussing the agenda.

Literature survey, theoretical research, equation derivation, and program development are all part of my day and take a heavy load on my brain. Sometimes when I feel stuck on certain things, I go to the rooftop to cool my brain down. Just seeing this beautiful autumn view is sometimes enough to give me the answers I needed to get unstuck on whatever I was working on.

Time flies at work as I spend the day studying theory, coding up the solver, and looking for answers to the questions I run into as I go about doing my work. Today, I received the book that I ordered with the monthly reading allowance that the company provides. Deception point is the only Dan Brown novel I have yet to read, so I’m intrigued as to what this story will be like.

When I have tasks I’d rather finish before going home, I voluntarily stay after hours to complete them. Otherwise, I go out to the local run club, meet up with friends, or grab a couple drinks with coworkers to socialize. I’ve finished everything that I have planned for today, and because it also happens to be a Friday, I end the day by going to the local barbecue place with my coworkers. Because a lot of us are the same age and have a similar academic background, we have a lot of things that we enjoy talking about over dinner. That makes it easy for us to get along, which I feel also helps us be more efficient at the workplace.

If I do say so myself, that was a pretty darned good start to the weekend.
So that was a day in Peter’s life. How did you guys like it? Would you agree he leads such a full day starting in the early morning?
We’ll make sure to occasionally give you guys more such “a-day-in-the-life-of” of our various team members going forward!
E8IGHT will strive to develop and share technology that makes the world a better place.
Thank you.
